[edit]I found the ABS Article at Tasman Bridge. It confirms some details, although it gives only scant coverage to the accident itself (it is more concerned with the previous bridge and the impact on the community of the sudden loss of the bridge). Somewhere, the inquest must have been covered by the media - it was a pretty major incident! Garrie 21:38, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
It is stated that the "Illawarra was capable of passing underneath the bridge's central navigation span, but the captain instead attempted to pass through one of the eastern spans, due to a combination of strong tidal currents and inattention". Presumably that means that the Illawarra could not fit under the eastern spans. But reading the description, did the captain actually try to gp under the eastern spans? It seems not - he just missed the central span and lost control. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.197.15.138 (talk) 09:03, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
The captain
[edit]I don't have any citation, but I do remember hearing once that the actual cause of the accident was due to the captain in fact being an alcoholic, and who was under the influence on the evening. Can someone please verify this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.44.210.162 (talk) 04:47, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
